Stanhope pool is a community created charity venture first started in 1974. The pool is one of a few open-air pools remaining in the UK and is situated nicely among the North-Pennine hills.  The pool is maintained by volunteers and is financially supported by Durham County Council,  the Weardale Area Action Partnership and donations from our patrons.

For our most recent posts and updates please see the ‘updates and news’ tab

The Pool is currently closed.

Due to the failure of essential and legally required safety tests we are unable to open in 2023. We are working on purchasing the freehold so we can access funds for the essential required refurbishment in order to give our pool a future.

About

This seasonal 25 x 13m open air pool is a rarity in the modern time of homogenised leisure centres. The main pool is heated to a toasty  27°c (82°f). The most uncommon feature, however, is a springboard, which results in the pool tapering off from 1 meter deep to 3 meters deep

For children too young to be in the main pool there is a smaller pool, which is heated to the same temperature, and has a small slide, but is only half a meter deep.

Also on the premises, we have a cafe area with a  sauna. However, the sauna is usually only available as part of a private booking.

Snacks and refreshments are all available on site from the shop, as well as items like dive toys, armbands and goggles.

Customers may be asked to remove any fun inflatables not constituting a buoyancy aid if the bather number reaches or exceeds 60 people.

Lifeguards will request a swim test for children entering the deep end of the pool if they appear to lack confidence or have not demonstrated the required skills.
